Young people wanting to get the first step on the ladder to a career are being encouraged to apply for a traineeship at Wiltshire Council.
Now in its third year, the Traineeship Programme provides high quality experience in a workplace over 2 – 3 months, alongside support with maths and English skills if necessary. While the young people are developing essential work skills they are supported by a mentor and given help with CVs and interview skills as well as training to prepare for work.
The traineeship opportunities are part of a Wiltshire Council development programme that aims to give young people the skills and experience that employers are looking for. Young people wishing to start a career in the public sector or a wide variety of private sector roles can use the programme to bridge the gap from education into an apprenticeship or other paid role.
Work placements are unpaid however trainees will receive help with meal and travel costs. Each work placement will present an opportunity for a varied workload that develops a broad range of knowledge and skills, including general administration of a busy office, following procedures, team work and communication.
The programme is for young people who are:
- Aged 16-18 and keen to learn
- Not in full time education or training
- Unemployed, but want to work
- Qualified below A Level (level 3)
- Looking for a way into a real job
Nine trainees have successfully completed the programme to date, with some having gone on to take up either part or full time posts within Wiltshire Council. Others have gained valuable skills to take into jobs elsewhere or full time education.
Fleur de Rhe-Philipe, cabinet member for economy said: “Our traineeship opportunities are a great way to prepare young people for the working environment. They learn a number of skills and gain crucial experience, all of which helps them become excellent employees. I would encourage anyone who meets the criteria and is passionate about starting a career, to apply.
Current traineeship vacancies include: business administration in Trowbridge, youth work in Chippenham, marketing in Trowbridge and sports assistant in south or east Wiltshire.
