Warn everyone about this Corsham phone scam

1. Recently my customers in Corsham & Bath had calls from someone impersonating “Microsoft” saying their computers were infected. They gave them a fictitious address in Birmingham. 2. They had them to install software to remotely control their computers and access all their files and e-mails.
3. They ran software programmes remotely and found hundreds of computer registry errors.
4. They convinced the victims that these were serious computer Virus’s and Spyware infections. 5. They cleaned the systems of the fictitious infections and harmless registry ‘errors’. Then they demanded the victims paid £240 with their Credit or Debit cards. They paid them by card and removed the payment from the victims bank accounts. During the session they accessed the victims personal files and E-mails. After a few days they took even more money from their bank accounts. 6. If the victims refuse to pay, the fraudsters remove all their correspondence remotely and install a start-up password on the computers. 7. When switching on their computer they would get a message saying ” this computer is configured to require a password in order to start up”. Sometimes an international phone number to ring appears on screen or the criminals phone back to demand a ransom for the password to switch on their victims computers and release the data and private files.
This is a known scam of organized criminal gangs who try to extort money out of innocent victims. They call phones at least once a week, sometimes more. If they find a victim they will pass the persons details on to other international criminal gangs. There are ransomware infections around that can encrypt all your files and demand you pay a ransom to decrypt them. This is called CryptoLocker which uses a stealth form of encryption, which can be impossible to see and decrypt unless you have the password. They say the only way to retrieve the files is to pay the ransom via Bitcoins to the criminal gangs. However most computers do an automatic backup of the data. Usually the data is recoverable and the Virus and Spyware infections can be removed . So far I have a 100% record for retrieving files from CryptoLocker infected computers.
“Tell them you do not own a computer and they will hang up”
