A hardworking team of Corsham volunteers have received a regional award in recognition of their support for local families.
The Marsh Trust Barnardo’s Volunteer of the Year Award recognises outstanding dedication and commitment to the charity.
This year it was presented to seven supporters who help at the Barnardo’s Sure Start Children’s Centre in Kings Avenue.
The project, managed on behalf of Wiltshire Council, provides free support and advice to local parents and carers of under-5s.
Over the last 12 months the volunteers provided almost 600 hours of their own time to run local activities and events.
The framed certificates were presented to Sam Sanders, Sally Simms, Kerri Harmer, Lesley Ford, Jane Evans, Becky Gray and Kirsty Page, before staff join them in cutting a specially-decorated ‘thank-you’ cake.
The team, aged from 24 to 54 years old, were nominated by Barnardo’s project worker Adele Radice.
She said: “We are sincerely grateful to all of the volunteers who have offered so many hours of support.
“They are dedicated to the welfare of local families and play a crucial role in allowing us to provide so many activities.
“They help with the planning, provision and evaluation of a wide range of events from soft play sessions and toddler groups to drumming workshops and mobile zoos.
“They also support us on the administrative side by helping with displays, photocopying and information packs, and undertake training courses to offer advice on benefit and debt issues.”
Adele added: “The volunteers provide a warm welcome to families who are new to the children’s centre and encourage them to make new friends, reducing social isolation.
“Thanks to their outstanding commitment our staff can focus their attention on more vulnerable families in need of extra support.”
Corsham Sure Start Children’s Centre serves not only Corsham but also the neighbouring villages of Box, Colerne, Yatton Keynell, Lacock and Kingston St Michael.
The project provides a wide range of free activities including parenting programmes, soft play sessions and baby and toddler groups, plus separate groups for dads and new mums, as well as links to health services, training and employment.
