New Fare Structure for First Buses

New Fare Structure for First Buses

The new fares for First Buses in Wiltshire will be in place this week and it will be interesting to see the reaction from passengers and how it impacts on usage. First have introduced a more straightforward fare table where travel is charged by miles and it will remove previous anomolies on the 231 service for passengers travelling into Bath from Corsham and Box. However First will not now offer a return fare option – it will all be based on a single ticket structure with the option of a day rover ticket for passengers making more than one journey during the day. So last week a return ticket from Corsham to Bath would have cost £5.50; from this week a single ticket will cost £4.50 or a day ticket to cover any onward journey or a return will cost £7.00. Travelling into Chippenham will however be slightly cheaper as a single from Corsham to the Chippenham bus station will be £2.50; so a single there and back will be less than the £5.40 that it would have cost last week.
Is the offer of a day ticket an attractive option for passengers using the 231 on a regular basis or do passengers just want a ‘there and back’ return option? Weekly tickets are of course still available for daily passengers.
I’d be interested to hear the views of bus users or car drivers who might consider bus travel as an alternative journey option.
