Who would have thought, twenty years ago, that a couple of bands playing on the flat roof of the ladies toilet at the Queens Head would have grown into an event, with nine bands playing over eight hours, and could raise £3,249 for the RUH ‘Forever Friends’? In fact over £20,000 has been raised over the last 20 years. ‘Box Rocks’ is an all-age annual event which attracts the ‘who’s who’ of the local community and has showcased talent often before it has been picked up nationally.
The August Bank Holiday sun certainly had its hat on for the crowd that cheered on memorable performances from ‘Exit Plan’, internationally flavoured ‘What Flag’ and Bristol’s festival-topping ‘Funkinsteins’. The music and ‘Hog’s Heaven’ catered for all tastes, with some fantastic finale costumes from the highly danceable ‘Rockin’ Horrors’ covers band being the icing on the cake!
The show was streamed ‘live’ on the internet for those unable to attend, for locals on holiday outside the country, and other fans originally from Box or beyond. Many commented upon the excellent sound and lighting show, provided by a professional volunteer crew, which helped showcase a wide range of skills and talent from around the village. It all went to prove that nothing quite beats promoting and enjoying music – ‘live’.
