Action on obesity in Wiltshire

Dear Our Community Matters readers,

Can you spare a few moments to help us tackle the problem of obesity in Wiltshire? If you are involved with a group that runs food or activity sessions be it lunch clubs, dance, or even clearing pathways and creating spaces to encourage more people to be active, please click the link and send your views to us by 1st May or forward it to a group near you that does.

Currently in Wiltshire, 1 in 5 children in reception year (age 4- 5 years) and 1 in 3 children in Year 6 (age 10-11 years) are overweight or obese. The levels in the adult population are even worse, over half the adult population are overweight or obese. People who are above a healthy weight are more likely to develop diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, some cancers and kidney and liver disease.

Due to the complexity and scope of the problem a co-ordinated multi-disciplinary approach involving all partners is needed to reduce the obesity prevalence in Wiltshire.

We are developing an obesity strategy for Wiltshire in collaboration with the Clinical Commissioning Group. The strategy will take a life course approach to tackling obesity, with a renewed focus on each life stage. As a first step to this work, we invite you to participate in the strategy mapping exercise by completing and submitting the survey attached. We also strongly encourage you to forward this survey on to other partners and stakeholders within your network who are involved in services and projects relating to obesity prevention and management.

This mapping of all and any services that have and continue to be delivered in Wiltshire is designed so that you can have your say. By taking account of other people’s views and opinions the Wiltshire obesity strategy will be better able to understand the issues and concerns, and your feedback will help us to find solutions that meet people’s needs. A key purpose of our Obesity strategy will be to pull together the partners that play a role in this agenda to ensure there is a co-ordinated plan of action to tackle obesity across the life course in all settings in Wiltshire.

If you wish to discuss the work you and your organisation have been involved in further or if you have any questions, please contact myself or my colleague on the details below.

Many thanks
